      Brentwood Welcomes Serendipity Wine Cellars

Article Written by Jake Menez at ThePress.net

Local wine lovers will have another reason to celebrate later this year as a new winery joins the ever-growing list of selections in Brentwood.

Serendipity Cellars, located on Chestnut Street just outside of downtown, plans to open this summer as a “boutique winery experience,” featuring six varietals of fantastic wine.

Owners Bryan and Michele Lucay ended up in the winemaking game wholly by accident, they admit.

By trade, they work in construction, having established their own contracting company — GroundWorks Inc. — back in 2002.

Beyond that, they were never wine drinkers, preferring the taste of tequila. But all that changed in 2004 when they took on a job engraving concrete at Ceja Vineyards in Napa, where the winemaker insisted on offering them wine as thanks.

The pair politely refused at first, saying they didn’t care for wine, but the veteran winemaker told them, “It’s not that you don’t like wine — you just haven’t found a wine you like.” With that, he once again offered each of them a glass, and the rest is history.

“That experience is really what started us on this journey,” Michele said. “We had sent out 2,500 flyers to wineries in Napa to show them this engraved concrete idea we were working on. Out of those 2,500, the one winery to reach out was Ceja — that’s the serendipity we named the winery after.”

Soon after discovering a passion for drinking wine, the Lucays jumped headfirst into making it when their new friend at Ceja called and asked if they would like 250 mourvèdre grape vines.

Bryan, always eager to learn something new in the most hands-on way possible, quickly accepted. That was twelve years ago.

Today, Michele and Bryan are coming into their own as winemakers as they prepare for the grand opening of Serendipity Cellars this summer.

      About the Winemaker

Serendipity Cellars - Wine Maker Bryan Lucay

Bryan Lucay has always had a passion to create and has always been resourceful in educating himself.  He has been in the construction industry for 37 years, a home winemaker for 12 years and completed our first commercial harvest in 2020.

His passion to perfect what he loves has taken him on the journey of studying the terroir and viticulture in the Contra Costa region.  Bryan’s belief is to allow the characteristics of the grapes to shine, which is clearly reflected in his wines.

His ultimate goal is not to create a Napa Valley wine, but to create a wine in which you don’t have to go to Napa Valley to acquire.

Almonds: Nutritious Nuts Grown Right in Brentwood

On National Almond Day, we pay tribute to a nut that provides 6 grams of plant protein, 4 grams of fiber and is a “good” source of unsaturated fats and is nutrients filled. Soak them and extract the liquids and you have almond milk, a nutritious dairy substitute. Ground them up and you have a healthy alternative to flour.  Almonds are among one of the most versatile nuts around and have gained much popularity in recent years.

Although almonds grow in 7 different countries, California produces 80% of the world’s supply! Did you know that we have hundreds of acres of Almond orchard growing right in Brentwood?  The Bloomfield Family has been farming in Contra Costa since 1945, farming on over 100 acres of almonds, 180 acres of wine grapes, 400 acres of alfalfa, 70 acres of wheat, and 50 acres of cherries. Brentwood’s geographical location next to the delta, soil conditions and unique climate offers perfect conditions for farming.

Local Walnuts Are Rich In Nutrients

Walnuts are often overlooked as common food.  Walnuts are nutrient-rich with healthy fats, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.  Even better is that walnuts are delicious to eat as a snack, an ingredient or as a topping to add a touch of crunch to a favorite side dish or dessert.  Walnuts have long held a place in Contra Costa agriculture and continue to be an important crop for many Harvest Time farmers. Here is a list of reasons you should include local walnuts into your diet.

      Walnuts Are Rich In Antioxidants

      GurskyRanch_Local Walnuts (1)
Gursky Ranch – Photo by Ron Essex Photography

Interestingly, walnuts have higher levels of antioxidants than any other common nut.  Antioxidants are said to help repair oxidative cell damage by removing free radicals from your cells. Some of this damage comes from LDL cholesterol that promotes atherosclerosis.  The antioxidants come from vitamin E, melatonin and polyphenols in walnuts.

Walnuts Are An Important Plant Source of Omega-3s

Walnuts are higher in fatty omega-3’s than any other nut.  Omega-3s are essential fats, which means you have to get it in your diet.  Omega-3 fatty acids are vital to health because they lower your risk of suffering from heart disease by 10%.  With just one serving of Walnuts a day, you may reduce your risk of heart disease.

      Walnuts Promote Healthy Digestion

Another benefit of eating walnuts is healthy digestion.  Research has shown that when adults eat walnuts, the health-promoting bacteria in your gut will increase.  Unhealthy bacteria will lead to inflammation, swelling, and disease. People who eat a daily serving of walnuts have higher levels of healthy bacteria – which leads to good overall health.

      Walnuts Can Improve Cholesterol Levels

Elevated levels of ‘bad’ LCL cholesterol and triglycerides have long been connected to an increased risk of heart disease. However,  research has also shown than when people regularly consume walnuts they may have a lowered cholesterol level, and therefore experience a lower risk in heart disease.

Local Walnuts Are Easy To Purchase

      Gursky Ranch - Gift Baskets
      Gursky Ranch – Gift Baskets

Walnuts are incredibly easy to find at many of our Harvest Time stores.  You can enjoy raw walnuts, roasted walnuts, or even cold-pressed walnut oil and take advantage of the health benefits walnuts provide.  Regardless of whether you enjoy walnuts as a snack, or as an ingredient in your favorite dish, there are endless ways to integrate this healthy nut into your diet.

Walnuts are a deliciously healthy nut. They have higher antioxidant levels than any other nut, have exceptionally high levels of Omega-3s while offering a variety of health effects we can all take advantage of.  Visit our Harvest Time map to learn which Harvest Time farm can provide you walnuts all year long.

Make Friends With Your Local Farmers

Local farmers know their products, farming techniques and ways to enjoy the products of their labor better than anyone else. Whether the farm is a tiny family farm, a mid-sized farm, or one of our large community farms, the farmers are the experts.  Local farmers spend hours tending to their crops and maintaining their soils to ensure their produce is the best it can be. If you want to know what to eat, how it was grown, and how to eat it, making friends with your local farmers is the secret! Here are some reasons why you should make friends with Harvest Time Farmers.

      Harvest Time Farmers

Learn Where Your Food Came From

Even if you know the products you are purchasing from your local farm stand or farm store are local, really learning where your food comes from is possible with a conversation with a farmer. When you shop at a local farm, you can ask when your produce was picked, how it was grown, and how it is cultivated. Learning about the steps farmers take on their farm gives the food you are eating a bit of a story – and lets you know exactly what you are putting into your mouth with each delicious bite.

Learn The History of the Farm

      Harvest Time in Brentwood

Another fun reason to get to know your local farmers is to learn the history of the farm, the land, and even unique farming techniques.  To an outsider, a farm may seem like a basic process. However, the Delta land our farmers grow on has a rich history of growing a diverse variety of fruits and vegetables. This is what helps enrich the soil and make farming so successful.  A quick conversation may also highlight farming techniques, such as dry farming, organic practices or sustainable trends in farming. This information gives you better insight into the farm, the farmers and the food you are enjoying.

Farmers Will Share Favorite Recipes, Cooking Tips, and Meal Ideas

Farmers know the best way to indulge in their produce!  Many of the products you might find at a farm stand may be new – or perhaps you have never cooked with them before.  Most farmers will be excited to share their favorite tips, tricks, and recipes when it comes to preparing their products.

Visit Harvest Time Farm Stands and Farm Stores To Meet Our Farmers

      Harvest Time Farm Stands

The best way to meet our farmers is to get out and explore the variety of farm stands and farm stores we have spread out throughout our community.  Our Find A Farm menu will help you discover which farms and farm stores are open for business and what type of products they have available to you.  And keep checking back. As winter slowly blossoms into spring, there will be more farms, and farmers, to visit with.

Harvest Time Pays Tribute to Local Historian and Agriculture Advocate Rick Lemyre

The author C.S. Lewis once wrote, “You can make anything by writing.” Rick Lemyre, a local historian, writer, philanthropist, and business owner, has used the power of storytelling to highlight the history of far east Contra Costa, elevate the present community, and paint a picture for what the future of Brentwood can be. As we begin to say farewell to Rick as he prepares to move across the country to enjoy a well-deserved retirement with his family, the Harvest Time in Brentwood community celebrates Mr. Lemyre’s contributions to not just Harvest Time, but to the greater area. Thank you, Mr. Lemyre, for sharing the stories that make our East Contra Costa communities so special.

      Rick Lemyre

Who Is Rick Lemyre in Brentwood’s Landscape?

      Rick Lemyre - Brentwood Press
Rick Lemyre (Front Center) – Brentwood Press

Rick Lemyre is a longtime Brentwood resident with a background in journalism. Rick co-founded the Brentwood Press, which continues to be a beloved local publication highlighting hometown events. Another way Rick has preserved the history of Brentwood is by acting as the Executive Director of the John Marsh Historic Trust. He has worked as an editor for other local publications, including the Contra Costa Times and Delta Living magazine, while also playing a pivotal role as a grant writer and mentor at ODAT – Brentwood’s One Day At A Time Chapter. He is the Program Director at Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed and a longtime volunteer at El Campanil Preservation Foundation and the East Contra Costa Historical Society. At Harvest Time in Brentwood, we are honored for the growth and perspective he has given us as our Marketing Director.

Together, Mr. Lemyre has taken on the roles and responsibilities that have given him the foundation for storytelling and community growth in ways few other people can do. He has formed powerful relationships, while also dedicating hours of his time to supporting the labor that these organizations and non-profits require to not just stay afloat, but to support the people and missions they each represent. When Rick writes a story, floats an idea by you, or sits down to problem solve and figure out how to bring a new vision to life, you can be sure his ideas will be a powerful step forward in building our community in a way that respects our history and celebrates the people of our communities. Rick has not just shared the narratives of our community, but he has been an active part of bringing them to life.

Rick Lemyre Shares The Stories of Local Agriculture

At Harvest Time in Brentwood, our mission is to educate the general public about farming and our products while improving Agro-tourism education in Brentwood and our surrounding communities. We have become increasingly successful at meeting this mission due to the commitment of Rick Lemyre. From creating exciting content to attract people to Harvest Time’s website to meeting with our farming community to learn the best ways to support their farms, Rick has been a voice for our farmers and Harvest Time. We will forever be grateful for his passion for our agricultural lands and commitment to the farming community.

A Harvest Time Commitment to Maintain The Integrity of Lemyre’s Storytelling

Mr. Lemyree is a Brentwood Citizen of the Year, owned a Brentwood Business of the Year, has been awarded the Life-Saving Award, and has won the title of many journalistic awards. He has also helped create the Harvest Time community that proudly represents the local agricultural community. We are honored to have worked with Rick and grateful for his contributions. As he moves forward to enjoy the fruits of his retirement, we will remain committed to the integrity of storytelling that Rick has created for the agricultural and farming community. It is with heartfelt thanks we celebrate Rick’s retirement.

Harvest Time Welcomes Airaya U-Pick Farm

Located at 25221 Marsh Creek Road, Harvest Time is excited to introduce the newest member, Airaya U-Pick Farm.  Airaya will be open to U-Pick customers seeking apricots, pluots, and peaches this up-coming U-pick season.

      Airaya Upick Farm

Airaya Farms is owned by Mike Nydam.  Mike has dedicated the last 18 months to updating the farm and making it a welcoming space for the U-pick season.  First, upon arrival at the farm, visitors will be welcomed with expansive parking options.  This is a true luxury.  Following a paved road off of Marsh Creek, visitors can park alongside the road, or park at one of two paved parking lots that surround the fruit stand.  For people seeking the U-Pick experience on a tour, there is ample space for buses to park.

      Airaya Farm

When you arrive at the farm, you will be welcomed at the Fruit Stand. The fruit stand will offer pre-picked apricots, peaches, and pluots.  However, there will also be farm-grown herbs and a variety of vegetables.  Some of the freshly picked herbs you can expect to find include cilantro, parsley, and oregano.  The farm stand will also offer a small variety of pre-potted plants for people to purchase.  One fun option are pre-potted herb plants. You can bring home pots planted with cilantro, parsley, and oregano together to have fresh herbs daily!

      Airaya Farm - Harvest Time

Airaya Farms will also have a small picnic area for families. Under the shade provided by the farmstand, visitors will encounter seating at 3 picnic tables that offer seating for eight. It is first come-first served as no reservations will be available.  There are restrooms with handwashing stations on-site as well.  Mike also has installed a massive solar farm on his property that not only powers the inner workings on the farm but provides excess energy to be fed back into the grid. This promotes green energy on his farm and beyond into the community.

Finally, when it comes to the fruit, Airaya U-Pick inaugural year will provide visitors three types of apricots, pluots, and three varietals of white and yellow peaches.  With over 200 trees, there will be a great harvest through August.

      Airaya Farm

Mike has also planted an abundance of trees that will be producing fruit next year.  With the addition of 60 cherry trees, 60 Asian pear trees, and another 280 nectarine trees, U-pick going into 2021 will provide an even greater selection of fruit for people to experience and pick!  Eventually, Mike will have another 1000 trees at the farm and will expand upon his current offerings to provide more varieties of both cherries, stone fruit, and Asian pears.

Airaya Farms is a wonderful addition to the Harvest Time community of farmers, farm stands, and farm stores.  To learn more about Airaya Farms, visit their profile at Harvest Time.  Check back regularly to learn when they open for U-pick season, farm stand hours, and to learn about the continual growth of the farm.  You can also visit upickbrentwood.com to learn more about Airaya U-Pick farms.

Why Does Farm Fresh Food Taste So Great?

Why Does Farm Fresh Food Taste So Great?

Spring means farm stands and U-Pick!  Harvest Time farms are ready for the Spring harvest. This means we all can get ready to enjoy the flavors of farm-fresh produce.  Nothing is more appealing than the chance to purchase locally grown food available with bright flavors of spring. Here are some simple explanations as to why locally grown food tastes so great.

Locally Grown Food Is Harvested At Ideal Times

One simple reason locally grown, farm-fresh foods are so full of flavor is the simple fact they are harvested at ideal ripeness.  When crops are picked at their peak ripeness, you get the fullest flavors. Produce that has to be shipped and distributed to local retailers is picked before it reaches peak freshness.  This means the produce is probably not quite as flavorful, juicy and enjoyable as something purchased fresh from the farm. Do not be surprised if the fruit at your favorite Harvest Time farm stand was picked hours before you bought it!

      Locally Grown Food Is Seasonal

Locally grown food often tastes better than produce available in grocery retailers because the produce from local farm stands is seasonal.  When we purchase from grocers, we have access to a variety of food that is not always in season. Ultimately, it means we are getting produce that has had to travel a bit farther to reach the store.  This results in an earlier harvest date and less ripened food. Ultimately, that means a less flavorful fruit. When we eat locally grown food, we know we are eating fruit that is seasonal – and harvested at its peak.

        Locally Grown Food Is Fresher

A final reason that explains why locally grown food often just tastes better than produce found in a grocery store is that it is fresher!  When you purchase fruit from a fruit stand, or even better- you pick it yourself, it is at its peak freshness. This means the fruit or vegetable you are biting into has experienced less spoilage. Often, when the fruit is beyond its peak level of ripeness, nutrients begin to break down and the food begins to spoil.  Although it may only be in tiny increments, the spoilage impacts the flavor of the food.
